Neurology at CNOS
From diagnosis to recovery, the neurology department at CNOS provides comprehensive care for brain, spine and nervous system conditions. Led by some of Siouxland’s most distinguished neurologists, CNOS is one of the region’s top neurological centers for patient care. Every year, we’re improving health for more than 8,000 patients.
High-quality, individualized care from your CNOS team
Our compassionate, team-based approach ensures that you are taken care of. We use examinations like electromyography (EMG) testing to reveal dysfunctions of the nerves, muscles, or both, and then find your best treatment.
We will create a customized recovery plan that is shared amongst your extended care team. CNOS neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses and therapists all work together for high-quality, personalized care that focuses on the least invasive treatments first.

Tests Offered:
EMG (Electromyography)
An EMG or (electromyography) measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. The test is used to help detect neuromuscular abnormalities. During the test, one or more small needles (also called electrodes) are inserted through the skin into the muscle. The electrical activity picked up by the electrodes is then displayed on an oscilloscope (a monitor that displays electrical activity in the form of waves). An audio-amplifier is used so the activity can be heard. EMG measures the electrical activity of the muscle during rest, slight contraction and forceful contraction. Muscle tissue does not normally produce electrical signals during rest. When an electrode is inserted, a brief period of activity can be seen on the oscilloscope, but after that, no signal should be present.
After an electrode has been inserted, you may be asked to contract the muscle, for example, by lifting or bending your leg. The action potential (size and shape of the wave) that this creates on the oscilloscope provides information about the ability of the muscle to respond when the nerves are stimulated. As the muscle is contracted more forcefully, more and more muscle fibers are activated, producing action potentials.
EEG (Electroencephalogram)
Performed by a Registered EEG Technologist at our
Dakota Dunes Clinic ONLY
An EEG or (electroencephalogram) is a test to measure the electrical activity of the brain. Brain cells communicate with each other by producing tiny electrical signals, called impulses. An EEG measures this activity and can be used to diagnose or monitor the following health conditions:
- Seizures & Epilepsy
- Fainting spells or periods of memory loss
- Mental status changes that cannot be explained
*This is a REFERRAL based test, so a referral from an outside provider must be obtained before an EEG is performed at CNOS*
*Offered to patients 5 years and older*
Neurology & Physical Therapy Expanded Services!
This expanded service helps bridge the gap between neurological & physical therapy services for patients suffering with neurological diseases, injuries, complications and disorders such as:
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Headaches
- Balance
- Dizziness
